This June, no new members will be able to join the pools of the previous (standardized) Medicare Supplement Insurance Plans. While modernized Medigap Plans will have some of the same names, such as the most popular Plan F, the pools will not be the same. As of June 1st, new members will be considered to be in a different pool than people whom already have a Medigap Plan F. Why should that matter to you?
No new healthy people will be joining the old pools. That just leaves existing members who will probably need more medical services as they age. As claims increase, rates will rise, too. With rate increases, healthy plan holders will switch to the modernized plans with lower premiums.
Many insurance companies do not allow existing Medigap plan holders to change to modernized plans unless they are in good health. That makes it critical for you to make the change while your health is still good enough to pass underwriting. If you wait until too late, you could face escalating rate increases and no other options.
