With a Medicare Advantage Plan, you have a greater choice of how you receive your Part A, B, and D Medicare benefits. You may be wondering, though, how you can know whether a Medicare Advantage Plan is as good as traditional Medicare.
In December 2009, Medicare Advantage organizations were rated on a five-star scale that the Kaiser Family Foundation has published. The ratings were based on data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems, Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set, and the Health Outcomes Survey. While data was not available for new plans, almost six out of ten (or 59 percent) of Medicare Advantage plans were rated. That’s equal to 85 percent of the enrollment for 2009.
On this five-star rating, the average rating was 3.29 stars. Twenty-three percent of enrollees were in a plan with four or more stars, and just 20 percent were in a plan with fewer than three stars. Enrollment in Medicare Advantage plans grew to 8.2 million in 2007, and then rose by an additional 800,000 during the first four months in 2008.
