With a Medicare Advantage Plan, generally all of your Medicare-covered health care is provided through that plan, which can include prescription drug coverage. Medicare Advantage Plans may offer more benefits, and lower co-payments than Medicare Part A and B.
What are the real advantages of Medicare Advantage plans? To determine that, the American Health Insurance Plans Center for Policy and Research studied the health care patterns of those enrolled in Medicare Advantage plans, and traditional Medicare. The differences were striking.
Compared to beneficiaries enrolled in traditional Medicare, beneficiaries enrolled in Medicare Advantage plans had an 11-percent reduction in hospital admissions, and a 20-percent reduction in days spent in a hospital.  In addition, those enrolled in Medicare Advantage plans had a 24-percent reduction in emergency room visits, a 39-percent reduction in readmissions, and a 10-percent reduction in admissions that were potentially avoidable over the Medicare beneficiaries. These reductions may be related to the fact that doctor office visits were 25-percent higher for Medicare Advantage beneficiaries than Medicare beneficiaries. Medicare Advantage beneficiaries may be healthier because they receive higher levels of health care.
