Original Medicare, (or Parts A & B), can pay for a lot of health services. But it does not include your premiums, deductibles, copayments, and more. Together, these gaps in Original Medicare can leave someone dangerously exposed to out-of-pocket costs.

Medicare Supplement Plans with EmblemHealth are designed to cover certain costs that Part A and B do not. This includes out-of-pocket charges like copayment, coinsurance, deductibles and more.

Are you an NY Resident? Emblem Health also offers a number of Medicare Advantage plans in your area. Click here to get a quote for a New York Medicare Advantage Plan.

Should I Supplement My Medicare with Medigap?

Medicare Supplement insurance, or “Medigap”, is standalone health insurance coverage that can pay for things not included with your Original Medicare. This includes out-of-pocket costs like:

  • Part A and B coinsurance, copayments, and hospital fees
  • Part A hospice coinsurance
  • Blood transfusion costs (up to 3 pints)

Depending on which Medigap plan you choose, you can also get coverage for:

  • Skilled nursing care
  • Part A and B deductibles
  • Part B excess charges
  • Medical care while traveling abroad

The advantages of adding a Medigap plan include:

  • Medigap plans are non-network; Choose any doctor or hospital that accepts Medicare
  • There is a guaranteed enrollment period when you turn 65 (or first sign up for Part B).
  • All Medigap plans cover an additional 365 days of hospital care
  • Emblem Health Medigap plans are available nationwide

Things not covered by Medigap include vision, dental, hearing aids, or prescription drugs. This is why most people who sign up for Medigap also will add a Part D prescription plan. Also, if you don’t sign up for Medigap when you are first eligible, you could be denied coverage later on, or have to pay higher rates.

Q: When should I sign up for Medigap?

A: The best time to sign up for Medigap with Emblem Health is during your Medicare Initial Enrollment Period. This is either when you first turn 65, or, if you have delayed taking Social Security, it’s when you first enroll in Part B.

During this time, you are guaranteed to be accepted for coverage, and rates will be much lower than if you wait.
