— Pros & Cons

Mutual of Omaha Medicare Supplement Pros & Cons

Mutual of Omaha has offered Medicare Supplement insurance since shortly after Medicare began in 1965. Here is an honest look at what members can expect.

Mutual of Omaha Medicare Supplement Pros

Over 100 years of financial strength

Mutual of Omaha has operated since 1909 and earns high financial stability ratings, supporting long-term reliability for policyholders. A.M. Best affirmed Mutual of Omaha’s A+ (Superior) financial strength rating in March 2025. It cited the company’s strong balance sheet strength and operating performance.

Low complaint rates

Members file complaints far less often than the market average for Medigap insurers. This suggests steady day-to-day member satisfaction. The Better Business Bureau gives the Mutual of Omaha family of companies an A+ rating. It reports only 111 complaints in the last three years.

One of the largest household discounts available

You can get about 12% off premiums for living with another adult, a larger discount than many competitors offer. The discount applies even if the other household member is not a Mutual of Omaha policyholder.

Competitive Plan G and Plan N pricing

Mutual of Omaha Medicare Supplement Plan G is one of the best plans on the market. It has consistently low rates. This makes it their most popular plan by far. Mutual of Omaha’s Plan N is also one of the lowest-priced plans on the market.

Guaranteed renewal

Mutual of Omaha Medigap plans offer fast claims processing and guaranteed renewal. As long as you pay premiums, we cannot cancel your coverage. This applies even if your health changes.

Valuable added benefits

Members can get vision discounts through EyeMed. They can also join the Mutually Well fitness program for $25 per month. It includes gym access, nutrition planning services, and discounts on health and wellness products.

Mutual of Omaha Medicare Supplement Cons

Limited plan selection

For new Medicare beneficiaries, only Medigap plans A, G, and N are available in most states. Members who want Plan B, K, L, or other plan types will need to look at other carriers.

Above-average annual rate increases

Mutual of Omaha’s year-over-year price increases may be higher than competitors’. Keep this in mind when projecting long-term premium costs. This matters most for members who plan to keep coverage for many years.

Add-ons required for full coverage

Mutual of Omaha Medigap plans do not include prescription drug coverage or dental benefits. Mutual of Omaha sells separate Part D drug plans and standalone dental plans. These plans need extra enrollment and premiums, which some members may not expect when buying.

Fewer extra benefits than some competitors

Compared to carriers like United Healthcare, Mutual of Omaha offers a more streamlined benefits package. Members who want built-in perks like telehealth, nurse hotlines, or wellness programs may prefer other carriers. Mutual of Omaha often has lower base premiums, which can offset this trade-off.

Bottom line: Mutual of Omaha is a stable Medicare Supplement carrier. It also earns strong ratings year after year. Its Plan G and Plan N prices are among the most competitive. The trade-off is a limited plan menu and annual rate increases that can run higher than some competitors.

Just what the doctor ordered

July 26, 2023

Our Medicare Supplement insurance from Mutual of Omaha has come through for us multiple times. My wife had to have two different hip replacements. I had a heart attack and car accident that broke my leg. All of them required hospital stays… I was in for a week after the heart attack. The medical supplement Plan G covered everything. I had no out of pocket expenses except for a small Part B deductible which was just a couple of hundred dollars each year for each of us.

You do need to buy a separate drug plan. Don’t skimp on that part. And you should get a dental plan and use all the free cleaning benefits. It pays off in the long run.

Definitely keeping mutual of Omaha for all our medicare supplement needs.

We love the household discount

May 24, 2023

We live in a large extended family household. We picked Mutual of Omaha for all our insurance needs, including my husbands’ medicare supplement plan, because of the 12 percent discount for every member of the household. That really adds up for us.

The Medigap plan has always paid out promptly and we’ve never had any problem with that. When problems do come up with our other policies, Mutual of Omaha has always had good customer service. We’re very loyal to Mutual of Omaha and we’ve been with them since we were watching the Wild Kingdom on TV.

Great customer service

February 18, 2023

Best customer service I’ve had in any insurance company. It’s obvious Mutual of Omaha invests in a quality customer service experience. Hold times are always short, and every rep I’ve spoken with has been outstanding.

There are probably other companies that are cheaper. But when I have a problem, with Mutual of Omaha I know I can get to the bottom of it quickly.

I know all medicare supplement plans have to offer the same basic benefits, so good customer service is a good differentiator.

Medigap doesn’t cover everything

November 3, 2022

I bought my medigap plan over the internet. I thought I had a comprehensive plan (Plan G) but it turns out Mutual of Omaha Medigap doesn’t cover medicines at all or even emergency dental care. I didn’t know that I needed separate insurance for that. That’s what I get for trying to do everything myself. I went through an agent later and he told me I had a pretty good plan, but I needed to add a Part D plan and a dental plan if I wanted dental coverage.

So I bought both so lesson learned. Hopefully I’m better covered now.

There when I needed them

October 27, 2022

Mutual of Omaha’s Medicare Supplement plan was great. I suffered a head injury after I was attacked in my home and hit on my head with a hammer and had a long hospitalization. Fortunately, I had Medicare Supplement Plan G from Mutual of Omaha and they paid for everything. All I had to pay was my deductible of $233 dollars.

Good value, with a couple of perks

June 25, 2022

Mutual of Omaha’s got the same Medicare supplement benefits everybody else does. But their Plan G was cheaper by far than any other plan G in our area.

They also offer couple of nice extra add-ons: I get a discount on glasses and eye exams. And their Mutually Well program is just $25 per month, which is less than a regular fitness club membership around here.

Other medigap plans have a broader array of side bennies, but you’ll probably pay more for them. M of O was the best value for us.
