ACE Medicare Enrollment, Pricing & Discounts

Applicants age 64½ or older are eligible to enroll in most states. You must also be within six months of enrolling in Medicare Part B.

During open enrollment, you cannot be turned down for coverage. The insurance company must accept you when you pay your first premium.

If it is not Open Enrollment, you must go through medical underwriting to join an ACE Medicare supplement plan. This also applies to any other Medicare supplement plan. That means an insurer could charge you a higher premium based on your medical history or decline you altogether.

ACE Medicare Supplement Underwriting

ACE looks carefully at your height and weight when you apply outside open enrollment period.

If you’re outside of the company’s height and weight guidelines, you will likely be turned down for coverage.

If you fall outside the company’s height and weight guidelines, the company will likely turn you down for coverage.

Some carriers are more open to overweight applicants than others. If this concerns you, and you are outside your initial open enrollment period, tell your Personal Benefits Manager. We may be able to find you a plan that will be more likely to accept you.

Smoking or Tobacco Users

ACE charges a higher premium for tobacco users unless you enroll during your open enrollment period (in most states).

In some states, you must say if you use tobacco, even when you apply during open enrollment. These states are: Arizona, Georgia, Indiana, Kansas, Mississippi, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas, West Virginia, and Wyoming.

ACE Medicare Supplement Discounts

You may qualify for a household premium discount with ACE Medicare supplement plans.

Details vary depending on your state. But in most areas, the discount applies if you live with your spouse. It also applies if you live with another person age 50 or older. Applicants must have resided together for a minimum of 12 consecutive months.

These discounts can be up to 7% off the base premium rate.

You may qualify for a discount if you pay by annual, semi-annual, or quarterly bank draft.

— Common Questions

ACE Medicare Supplement Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Medicare supplement insurance and MediGap?

None. The two expressions have exactly the same meaning.

What expenses does MediGap insurance help pay for?

MediGap is private health insurance designed to supplement Original Medicare (Parts A and B). It helps cover out-of-pocket costs such as copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles that Medicare doesn’t pay. These plans are standardized by the federal government and labeled Plan A, B, C, D, F, G, K, L, M, and N.

How does MediGap differ from Medicare Advantage?

MediGap works with Original Medicare, helping to cover costs left unpaid by Medicare. In contrast, Medicare Advantage (Part C) replaces Original Medicare with a private insurance plan. It often includes prescription drug coverage and extra benefits like dental or vision.

With MediGap, you retain Original Medicare benefits, while Medicare Advantage operates through network-based managed care plans.

How are MediGap premiums determined?

MediGap premiums are priced using three methods:

1. Community-rated: Everyone pays the same premium, regardless of age.

2. Issue-age-rated: Premiums depend on your age when you buy the policy, and they stay the same as you get older.

3. Attained-age-rated: Premiums start low but increase as you age.

ACE typically uses attained-age or issue-age pricing, depending on the state.

Do ACE Medicare supplement plans include prescription drugs?

In the majority of situations, no. Medicare Supplement insurance usually helps only with drugs given during a hospital stay (Part A). It can also cover medications administered in a physician’s office (Part B).

Can policy holders switch Medigap plans at a later date?

Yes, but in most states, switching plans after your open enrollment window closes may trigger medical underwriting. Insurers can deny coverage or charge higher premiums based on your health history.

Can I use my ACE Medicare supplement insurance policy with any doctor?

Yes, as long as the doctor accepts Medicare patients, your MediGap policy will cover your eligible costs. Medigap plans do not impose any network restrictions.

Does Medigap work in combination with Medicare Advantage?

No. You cannot use a MediGap policy with a Medicare Advantage plan. MediGap is only compatible with Original Medicare (Parts A and B).

How does relocating to another state affect my coverage?

MediGap plans are portable across states. If you move, you can keep your current policy as long as you continue to pay premiums. However, premiums may change based on your new state’s pricing rules.
