Hi, I’m Tom Lockwood

My name is Tom Lockwood and I am a member of the MediGap Advisors team. I’m here to introduce myself and explain my decision to become a Personal Benefits Manager.

I know how frustrating and time-consuming finding a Medicare supplement plan (also known as a Medigap plan) can be. As I approached 65, my wife, Margret, and I started looking at our health care options. We were particularly interested in supplementing our prescription drug coverage. We needed the right plan to keep our out-of-pocket expenses manageable.

I contacted MediGap Advisors and started to ask questions and get an idea of what kind of MediGap plan we wanted. Soon I began to receive calls and emails from an agent who worked for another company. He gave us the “hard sell,” and then tried to pressure us to make up our minds quickly. I told him we needed some time to consider our options. He was not pleased to hear this and became irate and rude.

That made our choice of Personal Benefits Manager easy. We were done looking: we were only going to work with MediGap Advisors to get help with our health care needs. Working with our Personal Benefits Manager turned out to be a wise move, and it just kept getting easier. He listened to our specific concerns and encouraged us to take our time to review the options. Ultimately, he helped us find a plan that gave me more comprehensive coverage and ensured that it was my doctor who chose my prescriptions and not a restrictive drug list.

This kind of personalized customer service really had an impact on me. I have spent most of my life working in IT management and had never considered a career in insurance. After this experience, however, I really felt helping people take charge of their health care was my new calling. My wife (as always) was completely supportive, and now here I am at MediGap Advisors —and enjoying it.

My Wonderful Family

My father was a career Navy officer, so we moved a lot. We called places all over the world “home.” My family and I lived all over the U.S. and in Germany and Spain as well.

Living so many different places gave me a real appreciation for the differences between people. More importantly, it gave me a real sense of how we are all connected and how building those connections requires respect, empathy and integrity. This is a philosophy I still believe in.

I was serving as a member of the U.S. Navy when Margret and I met. We’ve been married for 40 years. Margret is my inspiration and has always supported and encouraged me.

We have two grown children: a daughter, Melissa, and a son, Gunnar. I am proud of both our kids and their accomplishments. Melissa and her husband Jason are amazing parents to Luke and Tyler, my energetic grandsons. Gunnar recently earned his degree with honors from the University of California at San Diego.

Margret and I are avid cyclists. We enjoy riding our bikes with our grandsons and always go out prepared for any type of weather. We’ve even been snowed on!
